In Memory of Gary Gygax anyone?

i would like to put together a small group of people (no more than five or six) who can meet once a week for several hours to run a D&D campaign. but i dont want this to be a traditional D&D campaign, i would like for several people to act as the dungeon master at different times. i would like to start off with one person running the game say, leading the group starting out in a small village as members of the party train, gather supplies, form alliances, and anything else that you would do at the start of a campaign and when in a town. then, as the party moves to say the forest in travel to a far land, or to kill a dragon or whatever reason we decided to form the group in the pub and leave town in the first place, some one else DM the game. i think that this would bring about an interesting element to a game, because different people would DM in different ways, and would bring there own twist to the story line, and yet they would still maintain a party member (obviously whoever was DM in would lead the party for that leg of the trip, however, they would have to separate DM and player knowledge, bringing in yet another twist)

if anyone would be interested in such a campaign (obviously i understand that people work and have school so we could play around that) please email me or leave a comment on this post and we will see what we can work out! i am hoping to get some new dice and i am seriously thinking about buying a set of campaign coins for such an event, or perhaps a few people would be interested in splitting the cost of the set? just a thought...

this is a small post to inform you all that i have many projects going (most of which are just sitting there waiting for my return)

technical, practical jokes

ever want to scare the crap out of someone who knows about computers? well here is a idea to play with.

go to data cent and pick out the sound of your favorite failing harddrive. then just wait for them to go smoke or get a cup of coffee and forget to bring up there screen saver. just set the sound that you picked as there startup sound and wait for them to restart. there are several other ways that you could work this, but i think that a drive failure right around startup seems like it will at least get there attention, if not have them take there computer apart looking for which hard drive is going bad

power corrupts

why is it that the same people who have told me i need to have an open mind at work, and be open to new ideas, are the same people who get upset at someone when they have a better idea? i work my ass off to come up with the best solution to a problem, and then i show that it is the best solution. so what do they do? the throw all my work out the window and cram there solution to the same problem down my throat. so why should i bother to have an idea? why should i try to find the best solution? i mean, if all of my work will be thrown out the window, there is no point in me wasting all that time. but what i love, is after i implement there idea, get it running, and i setup my idea, and get it working, and put the two side by side, and show why my idea is so much better they say "it doesent matter" and continue on with there plan, instead of opening there eyes to the possibility that someone other than there selves came up with a good idea they want to extinguish all hope of free thinking, and prove that they are truly in charge, and just as closed minded as they accuse me of being.

well, about a week ago my new ipod touch arrived in the mail, it is so sleek and shiny, and it is incredibly light, i am able to surf the web, check email, play games, listen to music and watch movies like 'Iron Man'

crazy weather

my god, there was a whole lot of a storm going on here yesterday and even into the night.

the first 4 hours of work went past so fast because the phone rang non-stop since we got there, the emails continued to pour in and the service tickets mounted. it was a tough day, but now that the dust has settled, i really enjoyed it. it was really nice to be busy and have work to do. normally i have a lot of downtime considering that i am "the new guy" and have yet to form my own client base.

also, i got a new office last week. yup, i moved from my office with the fire place to the call center on the main floor. i am really starting to like it, i still have a large desk, a workbench and in place of the closet i have cabinets and a small counter area. it is really a nice office, and it feels a lot more open than my old office. pictures to come...

last week at work i hacked together a php based website using a mySQL backend to track inventory. my manager was quite impressed with it and this week i get to hack together a wiki to keep track of collective knowledge. i am excited because i am starting to carve out a name for myself as the website guy!

subnetting and motorcycles

recently my networking classes have shown a greater interest in my ability to subnet, and because i never really learned it except for the stuff that i picked up on my own, it is becoming harder and harder to do the calculations in my head, and i have been resorting more and more to this lovely chart that i found




the thing is, i mean, i love using this chart, i would love to have one printed out poster size, but i really should try to pack the info into my head, it would be a lot quicker and i would not have to drag a chart around with me all the time.


on to the second part of my blog

i am currently in the process of purchasing a motorcycle, i am getting a great deal on it because sadly it needs a bit of work. to start with, the headlight did not work. after $10 and 4 hours of my time i got it working, i ended up just replacing all the wiring and switch for it. i added a 30 amp inline fuse where i came off the battery and a 3 position 2 throw switch. after some clever wiring i was able to get both high and low beams working.

the other thing that needs fixed is the fork seals need replaced. from what i have read it is possible for me to make the repairs myself, however, i dont know that i really want to do this on my own. it involves taking the whole front of the bike off in order to replace them. i still have about a month before i will be able to ride it because i need to finish paying for it and then i need to get a helmet and get insurance on it so i am thinking that i will take it in for repairs in a couple of weeks and just have a pro replace the seals.

did i forget to mention that my office has a fireplace? i did? wow, silly me. my office has a wonderful brick fireplace and mantle in it, i love it, the mantle is great for storage and as a book shelf and the fireplace gives my cube a very warm feeling, and provides heat in the winter too! i will post some pictures of my cube in the days to come.

Yesterday i had to be at the main office in lancaster for the monthly inter-office meeting, i was the first to arrive, excluding the boss. i was there at 6:50 am, and the rest of the office did not show up until at least 7:10, scoring me bonus points with the boss! we did the meeting, not a ton of fun, i got about 4 assignments for monday but at least i have an idea of what i am doing. after the meeting i hit the highway again, this time heading back to logan to work a full day. i arrived at the clients on time despite the meeting running over, and did what i was supposed to for the day. after work i helped my lady put her motorcycle away and then took care of some stuff at my house, only to return to my ladys to hang out and enjoy a few beverages, went home and crashed on the couch because there is no place to sleep in my room

drifting through reality

this post comes from work, i snuck in a wifi access point and hid it behind a desk and set the disabled SSID broadcast so now i can get online from anywhere with my laptop.

the day is going by really slow as it is only 10:13am EST



since the title of this post is drifting through reality i should talk about the latest stargate atlantis episode: The Deadalus variations.



i have only seen parts of the series up until season five when i started watching every episode. i am working to piece together the rest of the series so i can watch it and get the full story.

in this episode, a ship appears out of no where in orbit above atlantis broadcasting Deadalus IFF. Sheppard, McKay, Ronan and Teyla take a jumper up to investigate. There are no life signs in the ship. McKay opens the bay doors and they head on in, there is only a single jumper in the bay. McKay heads to engineering and starts bringing systems online and detects an energy spike, all of a sudden, there is a flash of white light and atlantis is not showing up on any sensors. they isolate where the energy reading came from and go to investigate, they find a control room that they dont recognize and a bulkhead door that has an interesting lock on in. they open the bulkhead and discover an alternant reality drive behind it. the drive has no off switch and every time it is charged they jump to a parallel universe moving them farther and farther from there own reality. McKay investigates trying to find a way to get them back home and the drive engages, moving them to yet another reality. they find an alien ship in orbit that starts firing on atlantis. Sheppard fires up the asgard beam, taking out the main weapons. the ship launches there fighters on the deadalus with minimal shields, and McKay speeds up the time it takes for the drive to engage, allowing them to escape. the next reality they are less than 2 million kilometers from the sun and need to direct all power to the shields. they do this and it is still not enough power to keep them safe until the next jump, McKay decides the only solution is to devote all energy to the drive and try to force a jump. in doing so they move to the next reality where there is no planet, only an asteroid field, when McKay has a stroke of brilliance. he is able to calibrate the drive to retrace its steps. they use the thrusters to move into a higher orbit when they jump back to the sun and McKay attempts to get the sublight back online to avoid the alien ship in the next reality. they make the next jump and attempt to out run the alien fighters but it is no use, the sublights are barely operational. with the first hit the sublights go completely off line and they are sitting ducks. all of a sudden fighters from atlantis show up and take out the fighters. Sheppard gets to talk to his alternant reality double and then they jump to the planet with no atlantis, just one jump from home. they head down to the hanger bay and an alien starts attacking them. they kill the alien but not before he shoots McKay and pulls the pin on a grenade, depressurising the hanger bay making it impossible to get back to the jumper. they make the jump and atlantis sends out a jumper to help, by the time the jumper gets there the ship jumps and is gone, but there are still 4 life signs waiting where it was. they move in and find that it is Sperrard, McKay, Ronan and Teyla in space suits. back at atlantis we find that McKay has saved all the data about the drive and could build another. Sheppard says no to the idea, but perhaps the people in charge will have other ideas

weekend status

yesterday i worked on my endian firewall, even got to the point that i was testing it, and again, it decided to keep dropping connections, so for now i am back on the Piece Of Shit belkin and, as always, my network is like a house of cards. i also re-installed windows on my clear machine and attempted to install a wow server on it. today i am back to working on installing this server and i will most likely go over to my ladys house and spend time with her. she has been really upset with me recently (its my fault) so i think that spending some time with her would be a good thing.

who knew

who knew that working 8 hours would be so draining? i had no idea. my first day of work was friday and i was there for 8 hours, plus an hour for lunch. i had plans to write this yesterday after work but when i got home i hit the floor and fell asleep. i did not wake up until 8 this morning, over 14 hours later! i hope that every day is not like this or i will never get anything done. altho, on the upside, i worked 2.5 billable hours on my first day, and to me that is quite impressive. all next week i will be in training classes so i am not looking forward to that but it should not be too bad. today i plan on rebuilding my wow server with the latest repack and building an IRC bot on it to sit in my IRC channel. other than that i hope to relax and try to recover from the week.

as some of you may know, i was in search of a job recently, well, that search is over now as i have accepted a position with Business system solutions in lancaster!!!

FieldCon was quite epic, i will give a decent rundown of what happened.

Friday
nathen and sunni met at my house and we packed up all the supplies and hit the road. the drive was not too bad, and we only got lost once due to misreading the directions. once we got there we started to unload the suv when people started yelling "wood run!!" so myself and nathen piled into the punch van with 12 other people. we had people hanging out the side doors and everything. when we arrived at the spot to gather the wood we first went and attacked the mech, after which we loaded the van up with wood and then all attempted to fit with a van full of wood. we ended up with 2 people on the roof of the van, people wedged on top of the wood in the back and myself standing on the back bumper holding on to the handle of the open back door. on the way back we hit speeds of 75 mph and i will tell you, that is really fast when the only thing keeping you from meeting the pavement is the handle of an open van hatch. when we got back we set up camp and i got the stew cooking. after a few hours i had the stew at a boil and it was time to light the bonfire. we gathered around and in fieldcon tradition passed a bottle of wild turkey 101 around for everyone to take a shot of and then set the fire ablaze. we had lots of fun playing with the fire and telling con stories. then at about 3 it was time to turn in so i put lots of wood on the stew and went to bed.

saturday
the bugs woke me up around 5 and i was not able to get back to sleep so i got up and tended to the fire on the stew and sat around, after a few hours people started to get up and around noon we ended up gathered together just chilling because burline had injured his neck some time in the night and was waiting for painkillers to work. around 2 people went on a booze run and nathen asked if i wanted anything. i was playing kubb at the time and jokingly yelled "yeah, a bottle of crown". so after about an hour of kubb i wondered over to our camp and took a short nap at the picnic table and was woke by the sound of a bottle of crown being sat beside my head, i could not believe it! so around this time people gathered together to get ready to play battle royal. the basic idea of the game is everyone was given a random item as a weapon and each item had special abilities. the rules were all explained and we all hiked up to the starting point. when we got there people were given there weapons in a random order and given 30 seconds before the next person was given theirs and sent into the woods. my item was a tennis racket that could be used to deflect projectiles instantly killing the person who threw it. i ran into a few people on the path to the final battle area and we decided that i would go through the woods and attack from behind and they would make a distraction. when i got around there one of them was already dead and the other was being chased! they ended up jumping over me in the chase and did not even see me so i went to find the DVD- the only weapon that could kill nathen because he was invincible. roman ended up killing nathen by removing his mask and came up the hill and saw me standing there and went to throw his fans at me and i swatted them away instantly killing him and i was the winner! after this we went back to camp and i took a short nap before the pool of bukakke came out. this was quite a show, people wrestling in fake jizz. after that finished it was time to pass around the bottle of leftover anime punch and light the fire! we played a few games of live action duck hunt, where 2 people are ducks and 2 people are hunters. the hunters are given roman candles with which to shoot the ducks. after a few games of that people decided just to shoot each other with them at 10 paces. and i ended up having a fireball go right past my head as i was watching. after this it was about time to break out the alcohol, and that we did. there was plenty being passed around and consumed. it was quite nice i must say. i ended up talking with cori until about 5 in the morning when she went to bed and i wandered around the campsite cleaning up some of the trash. at around 6 i went to bed.

sunday
i was awaken at noon when nathen and sunni pulled the rainfly off the tent allowing the sun to bake me. we cleaned and packed up the camp and loaded everything into the suv. we said our final goodbyes and headed out. when we got back to my place we unpacked all of my stuff from the suv and i got everything into the house.

the weekend

Welcome to friday everyone! Today i come to you from Four Reasons in lancaster, it is a small coffee shop and deli and feels very warm and inviting. i am sipping on a double cappachino and reading up on my tech news. i am here because i have a job interview today! thats right, a job interview. sitting at home was killing me so i decided to come on up here and enjoy some coffee and wait on my interview. later today Nathen Sunni and myself are leaving for fieldcon and it should be epic! i got some stew supplies, including about 10 pounds of beef, 20 pounds of potatoes, 6 bags of carrots, several bell peppers and several onions. it should be quite tasty. i am going to cook all this in a large cauldron (its about 15-20 gallons) and i will be sure to post pictures of it when i get back. the whole event should be quite fun.

at this point, due to the theft of the godaddy account for the domain name and the lack of a place to host fetishchan, it is unlikely that it will ever come back online. i am currently looking into hosting plans to get a similar site online but sadly it looks as though fetishchan has gone from me for good, oh what a cruel mistress she was...

so today at anime club we watched amv hell 4, and so i downloaded it to have, and i noticed that there is a amv hell 0, so i downloaded it and am watching it now, and the warning that they put on it is no joke, this is incredible sick, and twisted, and discusting, and i cant look away its like a train wreck

job loss, washboard

today i went to the washboard festival and ate some fries and some funnel cake. i wandered around with friends and megan, and i also took megan to anime club and scared her.

also, i lost my job, because i would not stay an extra 20 minutes after my shift, it was so great! anyway, this post comes from anime club, so i am going to get back to it.

what is love

well blog, i have a girlfriend! i know it has been forever since i even talked to a girl, but i have a girlfriend, and we are so happy when we get to hang out and talk together, i enjoy it sooooo much. and she is super nice, and beautiful, and sweet, and funny, and a lot of other adjectives that i am not going to take the time to list!

anime punch, day 1

we got here to anime punch in the early afternoon and got registered, then we got the ddr room setup and went to opening cerimoneis, and then went to a few panels, including but not limited to: "the trial" "whos line is it anime" "hentai olympics" and "your favorite anime sucks". we got some food here at the hotel and it was quite tasty. and then after the hentai olympics i then moved into the video room that has hentai scheduled from midnight to 5am, it is currently around 4:50 and that is where i am blogging this from!! i have never lold so hard in my life, this shit is epic funny!!

can i classify today as bad?

today was off to a great start, i got up, went to work, did my job, hung around there a little bit after and came home, altho, when i got home i realized that the bat cave needed some supplies, so i hailed captain sparky to see if she would like to voyage along. after i picked up captain sparky we headed to the local area walmart to commender supplies. on the way i went through the light by CVS pharmacy and after i crossed falls mill bridge i realized that there was a sheriff behind me, so i drove carefully to the walmart light and as soon as the light turned green he turned on his lights, so i pulled in to bobevans there and he followed me in, so as i was getting out my license and stuff he tapped on my window, normally i have enough time to get out my license, registration and insurance, but not this time. so i rolled down my window and handed him my license (all i had managed to find at this point) and he asked if i knew why he pulled me over, i said "uhhh, probably because i went through the cvs light a little fast" and he said that was the reason so i gave him my insurance info and then told him that we change our insurance recently and that i did not have a current card, he asked who i was with and then told me to just slow down a bit and drive safe. so sparky and i went on it to walmart, i was still trying to calm down from being pulled by a sheriff deputy, and we carried on with gathering supplies. when we had almost finished i happened to see a woman walking with her daughter next to her, and the daughter had the most beautiful hair in the world, and i stopped and watched them slowly walk away until the turned out of sight. so sunni and i continued on to find the last thing we where looking for and as we where leaving the isle guess who turns in to it? the mother and daughter that i had watched before. so i slowly walk past them almost in tears at this point, the mother said hi, and all the daughter did was smile shyly in that way she does all too well.

hello lolikun

today open and myself plan on rebuilding the webserver that once housed lolikun, we will start off by just getting a OS on the damn thing and go from there, im hoping that we can get it serving webpages today and if that is the case then lolikun will probobly come back online late tonight or tomarow and fetishchan will be right behind it, and then sunni and i will need to work on building her site. once we get all that sorted out open and myself have plans to build a technical wiki for everything from setting up a router to defragmenting your computer to installing a pci modem, so we are really excited about that.

weekend camping

the camping trip that was slated for this weekend was postponed after we found out that nathen who was bringing the tent, could not make it because he was called in to work overtime so the camping trip has been put off until probably summer time. its cool tho because this will give us a chance to find a nice place to camp in the middle off the woods and it will be a lot better than camping in the rain. so i think this was probably for the best.

wednesday!

today was uber great! went to work, had a great day at work, got a lot of stuff done, and got along great with tech and the customers where really nice today. after work i headed to columbus for class. on the way i stopped at the G.I. depot in lancaster and picked up a few things. (more specificly i got a hand grenade, a pair of chemical gloves and a gas mask) after my stop at the G.I. depot, i continued on to school. when i got there i found out that they moved the classroom to the other end of the building so i found the new classroom and got seated (only after i found and outlet to plug in my laptop) tim then showed up right before class started so he joined me in what soon became the heckler section of the class, because as soon as nemo started to teach we both realized how trivial tonight's class was so we ended up talking about our own machines until the break when he ran and got his laptop, after that we ended up doing our own things for the most part. then came lab time, and our lab for tonight was to take apart a computer, identify a bunch of different part and then put the machine back together, and it needed to work when we where done, so tim and i worked together and ripped the thing apart and identified all the parts first, then we put the thing back together, we finished with that before anyone else had identified all the parts required. but when we went to fire it back up, disaster, the machine would not even post! we began trouble shooting it, removed everything but the vitals, tried it, still nothing, so we reseated the CPU and the thing churned to life! after we put everything back together, we found that we forgot to hook the IDE back up, so we went back in and did that, and even after all this trouble we where the first ones to finish! so, all in all, today was quite epic

trebuchet specs

the day started off with myself picking up sunni and going to king lumber to get 2x4's, we got 4 12' long ones. we then ran over to savings hardware to get wood screws and some other hardware. when we got back to my cave, we started with work. ripping down the 2x4's and making the final choices on the plans. we decided to go with the base being 2' wide and 8' long. the fulcrum point is 3' high and the supports are in the middle of the base with 2 added supports on each stand. for the fulcrum we used a 1.5 inch dowel rod. the main beam is a total of 6' long, the counter weight is about 1' from the fulcrum. and the sling is about 3' long. all in all it will throw a half brick over 50' and over 70' in the air. pictures to follow.

dreams

normaly, i dream about stuff that would make normal people run to there shrinks, and i am fine with this because even tho when i dream most of the time i have no control over the content and it is just off the wall shit i know i am dreaming, so everything is fine. but what really jerks me awake in a cold sweat is dreams that are so close to reality that i cant tell the difference. these dreams really bother me because it is so close to reality that i cant tell the difference until i wake up, and even after i wake up i often have the memory of the dream as if it was just something that happened the other day, so i am thinking of those dreams as actual events and these memorys affect my judgement and i am afraid that one of these days i will be asked something or i will need to refrence my memory and i will draw off of those dreams as if they where actualy real. this really freaks me out because i have started to second guess my memorys about things because i just dont know if that even happened or if i dreampt it.

this is just a quick update about the trebuchet that sunni and i built, i need to get pictures from her and then i will do a detailed write up about the construction, building, and testing!
